Slippery Bogbonder

Let's dig in, starting with the spike caused by Tidus, Yuna's Guardian. That's one heck of a cool Bant commander, and players are responding. Slippery Bogbonder was the first domino to fall, with the Commander 2020 and Commander: Streets of New Capenna rare slotting perfectly into a deck playing around with counters and creatures.

The price on Bogbonder has fluctuated up and down over the last few years, but with Tidus driving the growth we're seeing the Bogbonder explode from the $2 pricepoint it was a few weeks ago. Today you're looking at almost $10 for a copy.

Here we have an old-fashioned two-card combo. This is sort of the classic bulk rare spike Magic is famous for, where a new release reignites an old, forgotten-about card. In this case it's the bulk rare Quicksilver Elemental from all the way back in Mirrodin, which released in 2003. Well, the Elemental has never been more than a dollar in the 22 years since, until now.

The reason is Vivi Ornitier, a Final Fantasy release that comes with a very unique party trick: it can freely generate mana equal to its power. And while it starts at zero power and zero mana, it's easy to see how quickly Vivi can power up, especially when you consider that simply casting a Monstrous Rage on the Wizard turns into a Rite of Flame. Of course, Vivi is gated by the once-per-turn drawback…

…A drawback that Quicksilver Elemental does not face, when it copies the activated abilities of Vivi. The result is easy infinite red or blue mana, and a massive overnight leap for the Elemental, which climbed from 50 cents all the way up to $15. While this is obviously the post-spike price and should settle down in the coming days and weeks, it's definitely going to wind up far above its previous price. Vivi is also the reason that Blazing Shoal has spiked to $20, even without an Inkmoth Nexus in sight. Like I said, Final Fantasy is making unexpected waves.

Moonmist

Remember this little common way back from Innistrad? For those of you who haven't continuously been drafting Magic cards for the past 15 years like I have, I don't blame you. Moonmist is a cool Limited card but didn't return when Werewolves did (they changed how Werewolves work mechanically in Midnight Hunt), but outside of niche Commander decks or pseudo-Fog lists it never found a home other than the bulk box.

That changed with the release of cards like Kefka, Court Mage, notable Humans that came with a back side of the card. This wasn't something designers had in mind when creating Moonmist, but here we are over a decade later with the common spiking from, well, nothing, all the way up to $5 over the last week. Dig out those bulk boxes!
